What is the difference between an art therapist and an art therapy practitioner?

A licensed art therapist holds a clinical credential (such as ATR or registered art psychotherapist) and works within a regulated clinical scope, including diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. An art therapy practitioner — my role — is certified in therapeutic art practice and consultation. I offer creative, supportive, trauma-informed art experiences within my certification, but I do not provide clinical diagnosis, treatment, or psychotherapy. If clinical care is what you need, I'll help you find the right person.

Do I need to be 'good at art' to do this?

No. Nothing we make here is graded, displayed, or judged. The work is what happens inside you while your hands move. Stick figures are welcome. So are smudges.

What happens in a typical session?

We begin with a gentle check-in, move into a guided art-making prompt chosen for what you're carrying that day, and close with a short verbal reflection. Roughly 60 minutes, no pressure to produce anything 'finished.'

How do in-home sessions compare to Zoom sessions?

Accepted Answer

Both follow the same gentle arc: check-in, guided art-making, and reflection. In-home means I bring the session to your space — you'll need a quiet corner and basic supplies (or a small starter kit I can bring). Zoom means you work from wherever you are, with your own materials, and I guide you through the camera. Some clients prefer the intimacy and presence of in-home; others like the comfort and flexibility of Zoom. We can also alternate between the two.

Is this covered by insurance? Do you offer superbills?

No. Human Thread Studios is an independent private-pay practice. Because I'm a certified art therapy practitioner — not a licensed clinical therapist or AATA-registered art therapist (ATR) — sessions are not covered by health insurance, and I do not bill insurance, file claims, or provide superbills for reimbursement. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds, and I'm happy to provide a paid receipt on request. Reduced-fee spots are held each month if cost is a barrier — please reach out.

What if I cry, or get stuck, or don't know what I'm doing?

All of that is welcome and expected. The work is held, slow, and entirely yours. We stop when you need to stop.
